Frequently Asked Drainage Questions
With over 15 years of industry experience, our team has encountered every block, crack, and collapse. Below, we address your most common queries.
Drainage & Sewerage Responsibilities
Am I responsible for a blocked drain on my property?
As a general rule in England and Wales, you are responsible for any drainage pipework within your property boundary that serves only your home. This is called a private drain. Once a pipe joins with a neighbour's pipe, or leaves your boundary, it becomes a lateral drain or a public sewer, which is managed by your regional water authority (such as Northumbrian Water in Tyne & Wear).
What is the difference between a drain, a lateral drain, and a public sewer?
A drain is a pipe carrying waste away from a single building. A lateral drain is a section of pipe outside your property boundary that connects your private drain to the public sewer. A public sewer collects waste from multiple properties. In 2011, water companies took over ownership of lateral drains and shared sewers, relieving homeowners of major repair costs outside their boundaries.
Blocked Drains & Modern Repair Techniques
What is "No-Dig" drain relining and how does it work?
No-dig drain relining (or trenchless repair) is a cutting-edge method used to fix cracked, leaking, or root-damaged pipes without excavating your driveway or garden. We insert a flexible, resin-impregnated felt sleeve (liner) into the damaged pipe and inflate it. Once cured in place, it creates a tough, seamless new pipe within the old one, restoring full structural integrity with zero surface disruption.
Why should I choose High-Pressure Water Jetting over traditional drain rods?
Traditional drain rods can often push a blockage further down the pipe, compacted it, or even damage fragile structural joints. High-Pressure Water Jetting (HPWJ) scours the entire inside diameter of the pipe. It cleanly strips away grease, scale, silt, and fatbergs, completely washing the debris out of the line and leaving your system performing like new.
How do I know if I need a CCTV Drain Survey?
If you suffer from recurring blockages, foul odours that won't go away, damp patches on your walls or floors, or subsidence, you need a CCTV survey. We run high-definition cameras down the pipe to pinpoint exact defects like root ingress, fractures, or collapsed sections. It's also strongly recommended as a "Home Buyer Survey" before finalising a property purchase.
Clean Water Supplies & Groundworks
What parts of my clean water supply pipe am I responsible for?
You are responsible for the water supply pipe that runs from the boundary of your street into your property. If a leak occurs in this section (often beneath your lawn, driveway, or garden), it is your responsibility to have it repaired. Insta Drain specialises in acoustic leak detection and external water mains repair up to your internal stopcock.
Can you handle the groundworks and restoration after excavation?
Absolutely. Unlike simple clearing outfits, Insta Drain is fully equipped for comprehensive drainage groundworks. If we must dig down to replace a completely collapsed clay pipe, we take full responsibility for shoring, replacement, backfilling, and complete reinstatement—whether that requires laying new block paving, tarmac, or concrete.
